A transformer is an electrical apparatus designed to convert one voltage
configuration to another.
Electricity is delivered to a facility by the utility at a high
voltage. A transformer will "step-down" that voltage to a lower
voltage that heavy motors and air handling equipment can use. More
transformers will step the voltage down again for lighting and
appliance loads. In a large building like a school there may be more
than one transformer. The number of transformers in a facility will
depend on the size of a facility.
A transformer is always on, even when the facility is not being
used and the lights are off. A transformer has no moving parts and is
a completely static solid state device, which ensures under normal
conditions, a long and trouble-free life.
